Per capita consumption of packaging materials in the UK is lower in European countries, but also accounts for 5% of the production industry. 70% and 80% of the packaging materials are used in light industry consumer crystals, and the rest are used in industries such as large-scale chemical, mechanical and agricultural industries.

The Packaging Federation estimates that there are currently 2,000 packaging material production companies in the UK with 100,000 employees, accounting for only 3% of all employees in the UK's production sector. The largest concentration areas are in northwest England, east Midland, Yorkshire and Humber. These regions have concentrated 40% of their employees.
